No Authority

The look on your face
gave you away
The way you rearranged
the cutlery
just a touch askew

Then like a deluge
the apologies flowed
in your rush to rid yourself
of the guilt
almost twisting your tongue
into knots of regret —
“I’m sorry”
“you deserve better”
“you’ll find someone
who will love you
the way you should be loved”
“forgive me”
“forget me” —

I listened in silence
until you pleaded
“say something”
And I said,
“You don’t have the authority
to tell me what to do”
