Too Much Work

We keep up the facade
with a shiny coat of gaiety
paper the cracks
with wide smiles
prop up the disintegrating edifice
on our egos

Once we shut the door
on the world
there’s nowhere to hide
the crumbling ruins
of a once happy marriage

It’s too much work
to resurrect what
we used to have
Kinder perhaps
to let it all collapse
so we can walk away
intact
