A Difficult Truth

Night’s torment shows
in rumpled sheets
a pillow dented
by unsettled dreams

I sleep like the dead
haunted by
half-formed faces
locked doors
that won’t open

Sometimes,
truth can be faced
only in the dark
for in the light of day
it takes more courage
than I possess
to acknowledge
the prison I am trapped in
